Η Νυξ αναφέρεται ιδιαίτερα από τους αρχαίους Έλληνες ποιητές, αλλά η μεγάλη σημασία της στην ελληνική μυθολογία υπερβαίνει τα απλά λογοτεχνικά πλαίσια. Η Νυξ ήταν κυρίαρχη αρχέγονη και κοσμογονική μορφή, την οποία φοβόταν και σεβόταν ακόμα και ο ίδιος ο θεός Δίας. Σύμφωνα με τη Θεογονία του Ησιόδου, η Νυξ είχε γεννηθεί από το Χάος
