Tanky boli vyvinuté počas 1. svetovej vojny. Tieto „mechanické vojnové beštie” však boli používané vo veľkom až počas 2. svetovej vojny. Väčšina armád svoje stroje vyvíjala a posúvala vpred, či už po technickej stránke ,alebo v počte vyrobených kusov. Do hromadnej výroby sa pustila Británia, Spojené štáty, Sovietsky zväz, Francúzsko, Nemecko ale i Taliansko a Japonsko.
