Auf sanftem Esel ritt ein Gottesmann
Behaglich durch den schneeverhangnen Tann.
Da fiel ein Wolf die beiden jählings an.


Dem Kuttenreiter ward das Herze schwer,
Er schrie und bog sich an den Esel her:
„Mein gutes Grauchen, setz du dich zur Wehr!“


Gestampf, Gewieher und Gebell erscholl,
Von Biss und Schlag war Pfad und Lichtung voll,
Und Haare stoben und ein Blutstrom quoll.


Dieweil der Esel den Gesalbten trug,
Verlieh ihm Gott zum Kampfe Kraft genug,
Dass er den starken Wolf darnieder schlug.
