About
美國在台協會 (American Institute in Taiwan) 是一非營利性民間機構,於一九七九年一月一日美國政府改變對台灣的外交承認後不久成立。一九七九年四月十日通過的美國憲法國內法(台灣關係法),授權繼續「美國人民與台灣人民之間的商務、文化及其他關係」。同時它也規定「由美國總統或美國各政府機關所進行或執行與台灣有關的任何計劃、活動或其他關係,應依據總統指示的方式及範圍,透過美國在台協會以完成、執行之」。美國國務院經由與該會所簽定的合約,提供美國在台協會大部份的經費及運作指導。而美國國會因制定台灣關係法,也在美國在台協會的運作上,擔任監督的角色。
美國在台協會在維吉尼亞州的阿靈頓,設有華盛頓總部 (AIT/Washington) ,在其對等組織駐美國台北經濟文化代表處 (TECRO) 及美國各政府單位間,扮演聯絡的角色。
美國在台協會台北辦事處 (AIT/Taipei) 共有職員超過四百五十人以上,從事各種與美國利益相關的工作,包括商業服務、農產品銷售、旅遊服務及文化交流。美國在台協會也有一華語學校、貿易中心及圖書館。美國在台協會台北辦事處在高雄設有分處 (AIT/Kaohsiung) ,負責當地商業推廣、旅遊服務和新聞文化工作。
