在1942年的冬季戰役中差點被蘇軍全部殲滅的親衛師,在1942年6月被調回法國整補,並且升級成黨衛裝甲擲彈兵師-阿道夫希特勒黨衛親衛師(SS-Panzergrenadier-Division LSSAH),1943年1月調回蘇聯,加入馮曼斯坦元帥(von Manstein)率領的第三十八裝甲軍團,表現相當優異,在宣傳部長戈培爾的日記中寫著:「希特勒對迪特里希率領親衛師的方式,讚不絕口,他的英勇事蹟,堪稱英雄表率。」
