About
熱帯から極地まで、世界中の海に様々な種類が生息し、一部は沿岸域の陸上や淡水域にも生息する。成体の大きさは数mmしかないものから、脚の両端まで3mを超すタカアシガニまで変異に富む。箱形にまとまった頭胸部に5対の歩脚（胸脚）があり、このうち最も前端の1対が鉗脚（かんきゃく : はさみ）となる。触角は2対あるが、どちらもごく短い。腹部は筋肉が発達せず、頭胸部の腹面に折り畳まれる。但しそれぞれ例外もある。
尚、食用の「カニ」としてタラバガニやヤシガニ等も知られるが、これらは正確には短尾下目ではなく異尾下目に分類される。よく見ると歩脚が3対6本しかないように見えるが、これは第5歩脚が甲羅内の鰓室（鰓がある空間）に折り畳まれている為である。
