In 1963, the AMX company was given the task of developing a compact medium tank with mobility at the level of the BC 25 t and more powerful armament. The vehicle was designated the AMX 29 Bélier ("Ram"). Its main feature was an autoloading 127 mm CN-127-F1 rifled gun. It would have had a crew of three. Trials confirmed high mobility and significant firepower; however, they also uncovered serious drawbacks: strong gun recoil, limited ammunition, high costs, and complexity of the autoloader. As a result, the project was closed in 1969.
