In the mid-1960s, the Bofors company developed a concept for a versatile medium tank that could be used both as an assault vehicle in infantry units and as a high mobility coastal defense vehicle. However, after Strv 81 tanks were purchased and production of the Strv 103 began, the plans to manufacture another vehicle were abandoned. The Strv 74 medium tank, which had been used by armored brigades, remained as an assault vehicle in infantry units.
